Our task was to create a Snapchat lens experience that would allow Snapchatters to embody the iconic character with her signature black braids and introduce them to Thing, Wednesday’s loyal friend and partner in crime.

Bringing Imagination to Life

Upon opening the lens, Snapchatters are encouraged to strike a moody look with Wednesday’s hair framing their look. Thing joins us with a surprise, users are prompted to raise their hands and snap. Through the marvel of hand tracking and gesture technology, Thing makes its appearance crawling from behind the user and perching comfortably on the Snapchatter's shoulder. With the world lens, you can unleash Thing into the surroundings directing its movements with a simple tap.

(more notes)

Animation for Thing was carefully researched pulling both from the classic variations as well as from the modern interpretations. We wanted to make sure the movement spoke to both fans of all versions.
Storyboards were meticulously crafted ensuring that we aligned on the user experience and the look and feel of Wednesday.
Wednesday’s hair was custom made and imported into Lens Studio to take full advantage of the hair system. We created new techniques to make the braids and insure that they reacted with the proper physics in engine.
